Marquetry - Step by step

Overlay
When making a border as I am doing here it is best to underlay the pieces to get a really good fit.  Using one piece as the template, place the veneer for the piece to be attached to it underneath it.  Score along the edge, remove the piece and then cut it out. Applying glue along the edge of one of the pieces, put it in place and cover the entire area with masking tape, slightly pulling the pieces together with the tape. The design I have here is really simple, but this is the same way you go about doing intricate designs. Use one piece as the template for cutting the next.

Here I have already gone round the entire piece, placing a piece of veneer underneath, scoring, cutting and sticking. This method works for almost any size piece.  I have removed the masking tape from one edge to show you the effect.

Place your metal ruler on the work piece and cut it to size using several strokes until you are all the way through. If some species are really hard, use the chisel-shaped cutter to cut through them.

A little border around it and it's done.
