Road trip - March 2004

Cederberg Mountains, between Clanwilliam and Citrudal.  (West Coast)

We entered the Cederberg Mountains on a gravel road looking for a place to stay.  There were several bed & breakfast places along the road but most seemed to be closed.  We finally found a farm run by a German family who had 3 cabins.  The cabin we stayed in is the middle of the three structures in the picture above.  It had two bedrooms, a living area and kitchen.  The cabin even came with a mangy tomcat which insisted on being very friendly.  The valley was beautiful with nothing but fynbos, proteas and a scattering of trees along the river at the base of the valley.

Robert taking a dip in the river not far from our cabin.

From the cabin it was a short walk to the river where Robert had a swim.  The water was cold so he didn't stay in for long.  The next morning we went in search of Wolfberg Arch.

We left the car in the designated parking area under a majestic old English Oak tree.  From there it was a steep hike up to the cliffs where it is obviously a popular rock climbing area.  The cliffs were magnificent with waves of yellow, orange and red.

Wolfberg Arch, Cederberg Mountains.

The Cederberg Mountains are in a very arid region so the vegetation is hardy and low to the ground.  We mostly walked on sand and pebbles to get to Wolfberg Arch.  We had a lovely view of the surrounding area as the arch is situated quite high compared to the area around it.  After enjoying the view and having lunch under the arch we headed back to the car and on to Paarl.

I grew up in Paarl in the Western Cape so I took Robert for a drive past the farm where I spent my later teenage years and to the town house where I was a younger child.  It was great seeing the old neighborhood again.  I also went for a quick visit at my school, La Rochelle.  Then we headed through Wellington and Worcester to Bree River where my 3 nephews live with their mother.
