![]() Robert & Jane 2 miles from Paradise after coming down from Camp Muir. Friday, August 26, 2005: It was 42 degrees F in the tent at 6am with a strong breeze outside. We decided to wait for it to warm up outside so we only started packing up at 7am. The wind was blowing terribly so packing up was a chore as everything kept on wanting to blow away and there was grit blowing around and into everything. We left Camp Muir at 9am. The wind was blowing but the sky was clear and we could see for miles. The snow started off crunchy so I wore my crampons but Robert decided to take his off after descending about 1,000 ft. It then got very slippery and I even fell over 3 times after taking my crampons off. There was only a thin layer of slushy snow over the ground which was not easy to walk over. Robert had blisters on his toes from the march down the day before so each step hurt. We rested and took photos about 2 miles north of Paradise. We
chatted to people on the trail which in all took about 35 minutes, getting
back to the car at 12:15, 3 hours 15 minutes after leaving Camp Muir.
When Robert took his boots off he found that he had one solid blister
going all the way around each big toe and several other smaller blisters.
My feet were tender but luckily I had no blisters. |

![]() Jane, Grumpy, Ruffus, Treasure and Festus with Mt Saint Helens in the background We dropped our gear in the car and had a wonderful shower at Jackson Memorial Visitor Center. The last shower we had had was on Monday night so it felt wonderful to get clean again. We had lunch there then headed for Mount Saint Helens. We drove to Johnston Ridge Volcanic Observatory where we saw a film on
the volcano and a talk on the eruption back in 1980. It was all very
interesting. We then headed back to I-5, had pizza for dinner and on
to Portland, OR to spend the night with Robert's brother, Michael, his
wife Nancy and children, Russell and Mitchell. |

![]() Sailing on the Columbia River, Portland, Oregon. Saturday, August 27, 2005: We all had waffles for breakfast then headed to the Columbia River where Michael keeps his J24, 8 Ball. The boys helped rig the boat and we set off for a leisurely sail up and down the river. It was a warm, breezy day, perfect for sailing. Sunday, August 28, 2005: We caught our flight back to Atlanta at 1pm and got home just before 10pm. In all we had a fabulous time away from home. I'm pleased Robert has now done all the High Points he intends doing and we can now choose which peaks we want to climb, rather than having to do them because they have to be done. The End. |
