Mount Hood Summit
Trip Notes

Setting out for our second attempt to summit Mt Hood.

Attempt #2 - Monday, May 31, 2004:
We started attempt #2 at 2:40pm on Monday.  The weather was good except for a few scattered clouds.  We had most of the heavy gear in the sleds with packs of about 25 pounds on our backs.  The going was slow in the beginning as the snow was soft and slushy.  As we got higher it turned more and more icy.  We got to a nice area around 9,400ft where we set up base camp.

We started digging a platform as there seemed to be none that other hikers had made.  There was one other guy, Richard, setting up camp just to the west of us at about the same altitude.  It took both Robert and me an hour to excavate a platform big enough and then another hour to set the tent up and make a platform for us to set the stove up on.  We only started dinner at 9pm.

The wind was howled all the way up and all through the night.  It was however not cold but I sure felt wind battered all the way.  We had a beautiful sunset with clear skies above us and puffy clouds in the valley below.

We had seen 4 parties coming down, all but 1 party had made it to the summit.  The ski lift had stopped at around 3pm so we could walk up on the slopes more than keep outside the wands, where the snow was uneven.
