Namibia Trip - September 2008
September 8 - Twyfelfontein, Burnt Mountain and
Swakopmund After a wonderful
shower and breakfast at Camp Xaragu we packed up and headed for
Twyfelfontein, which means Fountain of Doubt. On the way there
we saw this elephant along the road. This area is not inside a game
reserve, it is out in the wild. A ranger we spoke to later said
there are two wild male elephants who live in this area.
Twyfelfontein has several bushman
petroglyphs on the surrounding rocks. The one above shows Man Lion,
which is believed to be a shaman turning himself into a lion. We
went on a one hour tour with a guide who showed us all the best
petroglyphs and gave us some history on the farmstead. It was
apparently called Fountain of Doubt because the spring on which the farm
relied for water was not all that reliable. After this we went to the Organ Pipes, which are rock
formations that look like organ pipes and finally on to Burnt Mountain
which is an area of grey-black rock which looks like it has been burnt.
Just before lunch we left the area on our way to Swakopmund.
For lunch we stopped in a dry riverbed. Robert set
up the folding table and made tea while I made sandwiches from braai (BBQ)
left over from the night before. There was a lot of elephant
droppings so they must frequent this riverbed.
As we approached the ocean we could feel the temperature
plummet and the humidity soar. We got to Hentjies Bay at around 5pm
and got out to look at the ocean but it was very cold as we were still in
shorts and T-shirts so we got back in the car and went the rest of the way
to Swakopmund. We got there at 6:35pm so we bought fish and chips
in town for dinner. We stayed at the municipal
campground which is right by the beach and not far from the sand dunes.
Each chalet had a fridge, stove, table and 4 chairs, bathroom and bedroom
with two beds. There were almost no people there so it was nice and
quiet.
September 9 -
Swakopmund We went for a walk on the beach
where we picked up interesting pebbles. While walking on the jetty
we asked a local man where we might find the quad bike outfitters.
He pointed us in the right direction.
We got to the outfitters at 11:30 and
they quickly had us helmeted and assigned a bike. Our guide was a
very friendly young man named Mathew. We went out riding the dunes
for an hour and had a lot of fun. Once back at the outfitters Dad
decided he wanted to go again the next day so they arranged for another
hour with Mathew, which he gladly agreed to even though it was his day off.
After a walk through town I made us chili con carne for
dinner and we watched the photos we had been downloading from every day's
adventure. What a treasure trove of memories.
