Namibia Trip - September 2008

Wildebeest taking a mid-morning snooze

Elephants crossing the road

September 4 - Animals at Etosha

There were several hundred guinea fowl at the waterhole this morning.  After breakfast we headed out in our car for a day of animal watching.

We spotted this group of female and baby elephants near the Etosha Pan.  They were eating the leaves off thorn bushes and grass along the road.  At one stage the Alfa female decided the cars around them were too close and she flapped her ears, trumpeted and took some menacing steps toward us.  The car in front of us quickly started backing up so we had to get out of their way quickly to avoid a collision.  The elephants calmed down once we were further back.

Secretary bird taking off

We saw several birds, including this Secretary bird, Korhaan, Kori bustard, Hornbills, ostriches and a few others we could not identify.

Giraffes on the run

These two giraffes were on a slow march toward our car.  Once they got to the road they decided to do a speedy crossing and started to gallop.

Halali waterhole at sunset

This night we saw a herd of elephants, three rhinos and jackals around the waterhole.
