Granite Peak - Montana - USA

August 2002

Jane and Robert stopping for a breather.

We saw mountain goats a few times on our way to base camp.  Once we had set up tent they came over to say hi.  They ended up being quite an annoyance as they dug in the gravel where we had urinated to get at the salt.  Once we discovered this we realized we had to relieve ourselves far from the tents to not have the goats keep us awake with their digging.

Early morning on summit day.  The clouds were thick and within 5 minutes of taking this shot the view of the mountain was completely obscured.

Cloud hugging the ground.  This shows the kind of terrain we had to cover... rocks, boulders and more rocks.  Here's John making his way up the side of the mountain.

Our destination in view.  Nothing but jagged rocks and no sign of a real path to follow.

Robert at the saddle.  It was really cold so we had to bundle up.  With walking over the difficult terrain, however, we quickly started to perspire and had to peal some layers off.  This only meant that every time we stopped we would get very cold and have to don all our warm clothes again.

Just as we were approaching the Saddle (right).  The Saddle was the last time we saw any real snow.  If we had known this we would have gathered some in our drinking bottles as we ran out of water several hours before we reached the top.
