On
July 15, 1996 I came to the US to open a sales office to sell the hardwood
flooring my father’s factory produced in Paraguay.
I drove up from Miami, FL all the way to the Great Lakes looking
for somewhere to live, then headed east and decided to settle in Worcester,
Massachusetts. This town was
not well suited to my business, or me personally, as I found it too
traditional and unaccepting of things different or new.
While there I started putting my woodworking shop together in the
basement and started making furniture, as the town didn’t have much to
offer me in the way of entertainment.
I worked on my marquetry, which I had learnt to do in Paraguay, and
soon started producing pretty jewelry boxes.
However, after two winters I decided to run from the cold and moved
to Tampa, Florida. This was a
good move, as the Florida market loved my flooring and my business finally
got off the ground. After
spending a year and a half in Florida I moved to Atlanta, Georgia.
Not long after I got here I discovered that this is the
home town I had been
searching for. Atlanta is a
wonderful city as it has so much to offer.
There are movies in the park, bike trails through the woods, mountains
to hike within one hour’s drive from the city and many other
interesting things to do. The
people are also more cosmopolitan and, though Southern, quite open and
accepting. On
August 14, 2001 I met Robert,
(pictured here with Grumpy, Ruffus and Festus).
On February 24, 2002 we got engaged ~ he proposed in the kayak on the
Chattahoochee River. We like to go camping, hiking, sailing
and kayaking whenever we find a free
moment to break away. As
Atlanta is close to Lake Lanier, the mountains, and many fun places to
hike and camp, it is easy to pack up and head out for a weekend, as we
never have too far to go.
