Celtic Moments

I worked on this project for just over two years, first doing the marquetry, then the box construction, and finally glueing and finishing the piece.  It was completed on July 21, 1999.
Dimensions: 26 x 18 x 21" (66 x 46 x 53cm).
Box structure:  1/2" plywood.
The veneer used for the outside of the box is birdseye maple, with various other species used to create the marquetry designs.

Inspiration for the design came from a combination of old Celtic, Irish and Scottish jewelry which I got from a library book, and a bit of my own South African heritage.  The structure of the design, with the circles and cross in the center, was an inspiration from a picture I found of an Irish book shrine made out of bronze in about 1000 A.D. called the 'Soiscel Molaise'.

Making such a large piece allowed me to experiment with wood specie combinations much more than in smaller boxes.  I must confess that I went a bit overboard, and will approach the next one in a very different manner, but the overall look of the piece is very striking.

Each of the circles on the sides of the kist are different.  On finishing the circle seen here on the inside of the tray, I didn't like it but didn't want to waste the work so I decided to put it where it would be less visible.  I'm sorry now as it actually looks lovely and would have worked much better in the inside of the kist lid.

This has turned out to be a most rewarding project, not only functional but very attractive too.  To view more of my work please click on the link below which will take you to my main Greentree Creations site.
