About the Artist

My name is Jane Burke (previously Jane Spangenberg).  I was born and spent most of my growing years in South Africa.  After studying clothing design at college I joined my parents in Paraguay, which is where I was introduced to Marquetry.

I have a special passion for Marquetry and anything to do with wood. There are so many wonderful species of wood in many colours which makes Marquetry so satisfying, as you get to see and use several of these different colours and textures in a single piece of furniture.

I started doing Marquetry in 1993.  I was shown how to cut veneer with a scroll saw but soon found that it was easier and more accurate using a craft knife.  Over the following few years I worked on my technique until I developed a style that suited me better.  This is the technique I now teach.

Marquetry is my way of appreciating the beauty of wood and expressing my creativity.  What I find unfortunate is the fact that art is limited to the amount the customer is willing to pay.  People put a high price on my work but there are few people who are able to pay what my work is really worth in hours spent.  I sometimes add more detail to a commissioned piece, even though I get no extra return from doing so, just because I feel the piece would look so much better with the additional detail.  I take great pride in my work and feel I owe it to the creation, to make it all I am able to make it.

On July 1, 2007 Marquetry became my full time occupation.  The 11 Years prior to that I owned a wholesale hardwood flooring business.  But, my passion was always with my woodworking and now I love being able to work at a career that I truly enjoy.

Woodworking Experience
2 years part time apprenticeship at a fine furniture carpentry shop (where I was shown how to do Marquetry). 1 year as personnel manager of a furniture component factory. 15 years of making wooden items decorated with marquetry, both for myself and for sale.
